Formed by the composition of 5 villages; Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre locates in the Liguria region of Italy, just next to La Spezia. It’s story bases on even before 15th century; it was conquered firstly by tribes coming from northern Europe, and then by Bizanthians and Lombards. After 15th century, it’s popularity raised even more, and because of being in a very strategical location, the conquers continued by various emperors. After Vara Valley’s inhibitant’ located and changed the view of the region, Cinque Terre become a peaceful environment instead of a dangerous area. Being present in the UNESCO World Treasure list since 1997, Cinque Terre is a place where you may find unique beauty, and have the chance to cool down, find peace. If you are planning to visit this region, keep the expectations lower, fuel up the happiness.
How to Go? / Nasıl gidilir?
Considering village’s locations, travelling by car is not the best option; if you are road trippin’ you can drop your car at Genoa, La Spezia or Pisa and proceed your journey by train.
As a last point, there are ferries available from La Spezia and Portovenere that will take you to the villages; even they are a little bit more expensive than the train, considering the view that you’ll experience, it might be the best way to travel. 🙂 In here you may find the related information.
It is very popular the travel between the villages by foot; some of the villages are pretty close to each other and easy to walk, in contrast some roads between some villages are much hard to walk. (As of March 2014, coastal walks are closed; you can walk the alternative routes or continue by train.) If you are not a fan of walking, purchase a train ticket that covers all the villages within six hour period, costing only €4.
Cinque Terre’ye denizden ve karadan ulaşabilirsiniz.
My Recommendation / Benim önerim
Put your headphones on and let Klingande – Jubel accompany you. Start your exploration from Riomaggiore. The train journey that you’ll start after breakfast may make you hungry so by the time you arrive to this cute village you can try Mamma Mia’s Nutella Focaccia or Siamo Fritti’s fried seafood as a snack.
When you arrive to Manarola, proceed to right way from the train station and grab your ice cream from 5 Terre Gelateria Creperia that is located in Antonio Discovolo street to make your way to the beach. This place has the best ice cream in all 5 villages; melon, pistachio, mascarpone and white chocolate flavored ice creams are absolutely worth trying. After enjoying you ice cream with the sea view now your are ready for Corniglia.
Corniglia is differing from other villages by it’s location, it’s located on a hill and have no relationship with sea. After dropping yourself out of the train, you can either take the bus or take 365 stairs (each stair represents a day in a year) to reach the village. If you are one of those walkers like me, there is a tremendous view waiting for you at the top. In this village, you can leave your exhaust, by enjoying a white wine at Nunzio located in the square, have a snack with their delicious chips and olives and chat with your friends.
Our 4th destination is Vernazza, the absolutely eligible place for you to photograph the harmony of the boats and the umbrellas with various colours. You can spend your time watching the view from the rocks, after resting a little bit you may proceed to your final destination, Monterosso.
The biggest village Monterosso splits in to two parts; the new part includes the hotels and beaches, therefore the old part is full of houses that has the Cinque Terre soul and restaurants. You can turn left from the train station and proceed to the old district, have a delicious meal and end up your day at the beach. Also you can buy Limoncello which is special for this place.
If you are planning to stay at Cinque Terre; keep in mind that there are limited number of hotels present in the villages except Monterosso, and even in Monterosso the reservations should be booked pretty earlier than the travel date.
